How to invest

I’m new to investing – where do I start?

What does investing mean? What should I invest in? The choice is huge.

What is investing?

We hear you. Investing can feel daunting.

At its simplest, investing means buying investments with the money you don’t need now, so those investments can potentially earn money for you. The idea is that over the longer term – in five, ten, twenty years – this invested money may grow more than if you keep it in a savings account. However this isn’t guaranteed.

Isn’t investing risky?

All investments have risks. When you begin investing, it’s important to consider how much risk you are comfortable to take. There are investments – from safe to speculative – to suit everyone. You can make your own mix or choose from our ‘ready-made’ investment options.

  • Say you’re a person whose income fluctuates wildly, with all this risk in your career, you might choose low-risk bond investments with a low but predictable return because you want your hard-won money to be less at risk.
  • If you’re in a career with a reliable payday, you might choose mainly low-risk options but enjoy putting some of your money into, say, tech company start-ups, because you’re comfortable with risking some loss for the chance of backing the next tech start up

The more you learn about different investments, the more you’ll be able to work out what’s right for you.

Is a pension an investment?

Money you save into your pension is usually invested. During your working years, your payments are typically invested in products intended to grow your money. When you retire, the aim is to hopefully have more money waiting for you than you’ve paid in. Start as early as you can.

Why ask the ‘experts’?

The financial industry is one carefully regulated by law. Financial professionals research and monitor investments aiming to find what they believe are good businesses, projects and assets for you to invest in.
